24 Hours in Islamorada

Brian and I are back from an amazing 24 hours in Islamorada!  To be honest, it was pure heaven to be away just the two of us. Don’t get me wrong, we love our kids and by hour 23 I was itching to see them.  But to be away in a place so beautiful with no distractions was refreshing and F U N. Mostly we just relaxed the day away and laughed our asses off in a paradise where no one knew our names.  Because of this, it kind of felt like a second honeymoon!  Then we came home happy and refreshed kissing and squeezing the crap out of Brian & Grace.

Our Stay

We arrived at the Cheeca Lodge & Spa around 1 p.m. and were greeted with warm smiles and champagne. We raced to our rooms, put our bathing suits on and got down to the beach. Within minutes our chairs were being lined with towels and we were placing our margarita and fish sandwich order. The majority of our day was spent with our eyes closed, listening to nothing but the sounds of palm trees swaying in the wind.  Then the occasional splashes of water on the sandy shore.  It was truly paradise.

Things To Do

For just 24 Hours in Islamorada we packed in a lot of fun and sun.  Soon after laying on the beach, we felt like exerting some energy.  So we signed out beach cruisers and rode around the property and the cute little town of Islamorada. This ride let us explore the Moorings Inn & Spa (the real life set of Bloodline!) which was stunning and quintessential Florida Keys in style.  But on a majorly upscale and luxurious side. A friend inquired and rooms were going for $1700/night!

Next we popped out onto the cutest little microbrewery called the Florida Keys Brewing Company. We each had a beer, did a little more exploring around town and headed back to get ready for dinner.

Dinner

At night we had dinner at the Morada Bay Beach Cafe which was cute, casual and just what we were looking for. It was nothing too fancy but had delicious fresh fish.  Perfect way to enjoy outdoors on the water and under the pretty clear skies we lucked out with. I definitely recommend this restaurant for the scenery and food! I had coconut encrusted mahi mahi and Brian had the blackened snapper, both delicious. And of course we had key lime pie for dessert and it was on point.

After dinner we rode our bikes home and were asleep before 10. The next morning we woke up at 7 with no interruptions all night long.  We slept with the doors to our patio open and listened to the ocean.  Shamefully I asked Brian if there was a noise machine on, “no” he remarked “that’s actual noise, like from nature”.

In my favorite beach cover, hat and bag 🙂

The next morning we rented fishing rods and went fishing off the pier of the Cheeca.  And I caught my first ever fishie! I made Brian take it off the hook and then we threw it to a patiently waiting pelican and watched him gobble it down. I loved fishing and can’t wait to do more of it.  As long as I have someone handling the actual fish.  I just like holding the rod in the water and pulling the catch out from the water!

Breakfast

We took our bikes into town and had breakfast at Mangrove Mike’s Cafe which was great. There was a sweet little farmers market across the street as well with lots of freshly baked goodies and local produce.

The next few hours we spent lounging on the property and made one last pit stop at Midway Cafe and Coffee Lounge for a slice of key lime pie and iced coffee before heading back.

I highly recommend heading to Islamorada for a little getaway.  Even just 24 Hours in Islamorada will leave you feeling refreshed.  I can’t recommend the Cheeca Lodge and Spa highly enough. Everything was PERFECT from the friendly staff, highest quality of accommodations and amenities, the location was perfect for bike riding through town, and the beaches were pristine. GO TO ISLAMORADA, put it on your list 🙂
