8 Clean Sunscreens For Your Family

25 Jun 2019 Beauty, Style

no. 1 Young Living Mineral Based Sunscreen | no. 2 Beauty Counter Mineral Sunscreen Lotion & Stick | no. 3 Acure Day Cream Moisturizer | no. 4 Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen | 5 no. Sunnyscreen 100% Mineral Lotion & Stick | no. 6 Coola’s Sport |     no. 7 Beauty Counter Dew Skin Moisturizing Coverage | no. 8 Babo Botanicals Daily Sheer Facial Sunscreen

School is officially out and we are in full swing summer mode!  Before we hit the beach, pool or playground I want to be sure I have all of us SUPER protected from the sun with the best non toxic sunscreen for our family. I did some reading up on the latest information on toxic-free, mineral based, clean sunscreen recommendations and wanted to share my picks based on what I’ve learned and tried out to help you make an informed decision on what your putting on your families this summer. Below is a list of my top 8 clean, non toxic sunscreen brands for your fam bam.

WHY GO CLEAN WITH SUNSCREEN, mineral vs. chemical

Well for starters, sunscreen is something you’re putting all over your body, probably every single day so the exposure is high. There are chemical sunscreens and mineral-based sunscreens. We like to use mineral based sunscreens because we’re using naturally-occurring minerals from the earth that act as a barrier, think of a shield, for our skin against harmful UV-rays.

On the flip-side, chemical-based sunscreens are made in a lab of synthetic ingredients, and rather than acting as a barrier, the chemicals in the sunscreen absorb the UV rays and cause a little chemical reaction to occur right on your skin. They change the rays into heat and then release them from the skin. Are you going to get cancer and die when you use a chemical sunscreen? NO, lol. But if you’re shopping for sunscreen, you may as well go for the mineral based ones. You can read more about the trouble with chemical sunscreens from the EWG (environmental working group) here.

MY TOP RECOMMENDATIONS

Young Living Mineral Based Sunscreen – SPF 50

toxic-free making it perfect for adults & kids!  This is probably my number one pick because it goes on super thick  and stays on for hours, you can see the water beading off it literally all day.  Recommended reapplication is 80 minutes of water and sweat resistance.

Supergoop! Sunnyscreen 100% Mineral Lotion For Babies & Kiddos – SPF 50

We also love Supergoop! I worked with them years ago and have enjoyed using it since. I personally like how it leaves no white residue from zinc. It’s pediatrician-tested, fragrance-free, silicone free, hypoallergenic and super hydrating. This bottle is the perfect size for your diaper and/or beach bag!  They also have it in a mineral stick form which helps for easy application on those wiggly little bodies.

Acure Radically Rejuvenating Day Cream Facial Moisturizer – SPF 30

This has been a favorite this summer for my face and body. It goes on REALLY light and doesn’t feel like you’re even wearing sunscreen which kind of scares me but I have yet to get a sun burn so 🤷🏼‍♀️ It’s also super affordable and you can get it at Target or order on Amazon.  It’s a moisturizer, sun-protectant and antioxidant all in one!  Has turmeric, ferulic acid & vitamin C, I’ll take it! I keep the little one in my purse at all times.

Beauty Counter Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Lotion – SPF 30

When it comes to toxic free you can pretty much rely on Beauty Counter. I haven’t tried this one yet but everyone I know who does use it, RAVES about it! I think I’ll order it and give it a try, do you use it??

Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen  – SPF 30+

Maximum water and sweat resistance for up to 80 mins.  Not only reflects the sun but also protects from 97% of the suns burning rays.  This brand originates from Australia where their extreme UV rays put this sunscreen to the test and earned the trust of many dermatologists before coming over to USA.

COOLA Citrus Mimosa Mineral Sport – SPF 30

I have used and loved this brand for years, and think this one is definitely a must try!  This has broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protectant with organic oils and has citrus mimosa scent. Love the idea of a mimosa scent but that also means fragrance so if you’re trying to stay away from that, this may not be for you!

Beauty Counter Dew Skin Moisturizing Coverage

Goop says this is “the ultimate no-makeup makeup of all time”.  This super hydrating formula brightens & moisturizes your skin making it appear smooth.  It is not your full-coverage solution but the lightness has so many benefits and has SPF 20.

Babo Botanicals Daily Sheer Facial Sunscreen

Great for anyone who has extra sensitive skin but still want everyday sun protection.  It’s hypoallergenic, fragrance-free and really lightweight.  It’s highly rated and under $35.

Helpful resources I referenced in writing this post and would recommend as additional reading on this topic!

We’re currently in Phase 1 of our Costa Rican ad We’re currently in Phase 1 of our Costa Rican adventure. This is the two week decompression period where we train our bodies and minds to slow down (this is more for me than anyone else), and let me tell you, I’m lapping it up. We’re spending all day outside at the beach, going to bed early, eating lots of fresh fruit and healthy foods, swimming in the ocean, I’m working out and meditating in the mornings, and having fun together. For someone who is usually always in high gear, this part is my gift to myself 🐚

We are staying at a beautiful place in papagayo with @exclusiveresorts and it feels very luxurious and restorative.

The kids are already thriving. Being together 24/7 comes with its arguments and fights but they are learning how to just be with each other and with their crazy little brother. They’re helping a lot with him, learning a little Spanish, surfing, writing in their journals, and meeting kids from all over the world who are staying here as well.

I’m letting us get pampered for this phase, and it feels really good.

Thanks for coming along, I hope your year is off to an amazing start! Is there anything specific you’d like me to share about while we’re in this phase? I was thinking about sharing my morning workouts and meditations, but let me know!
Recently, I downloaded the Melissa Wood health app Recently, I downloaded the Melissa Wood health app @melissawoodtepperberg @melissawoodhealth and so far I’m loving the workouts. I try and do one every morning. They’re super quick so sometimes I do two. I like that they are gentle but hard. They incorporate a lots of yoga, pilates, breathing, stretching, balancing and all that good stuff. You can see from the videos I’m pretty shaky in the first couple clips, that balance is tough but I’m building up my strength, I can feel it 💪🏻
