When Brian was about 4 years old, he started having terrible respiratory issues. Each time he would get a cold, it would go straight to his airways and we ended up on a nebulizer. It was happening so often that I began to feel helpless. One day, a light bulb went off. My mama bear instincts kicked in and I did a complete overhaul of everything in our home. I had learned that so many of the things we were using on the regular, candles, cleaning products, laundry detergents, air fresheners could be lung irritants so I ditched them all and began looking for safer alternatives.
I found Young Living and started diffusing essential oils instead of burning candles, I switched out cleaning products over to Thieves, I switched our laundry detergent out for Thieves Laundry Soap, I began using immune supporting oils on our family, and taking supplements.
I. Have. Never. Looked. Back.
Did you know?
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health studied 2,983 ingredients in our products at home and found 884 toxic ingredients. 314 caused biological mutations, 218 caused reproductive problems, 146 (they knew) caused cancerous tumors, but were allowed in the United States, even though they were banned in other countries around the world. Twenty-six seconds after exposure, chemicals are found in measurable amounts in the human body. The average woman applies 300 chemicals a day to her body.
The top 10 most dangerous chemicals in your home are: air fresheners (like plug ins or candles), chemical cleaning supplies for your counters, floors, toilets, drain and oven cleaners, furniture polish, dishwasher soap, and dish soap are also culprits.
It’s a huge undertaking to have a home that’s completely free of toxins. Striving for perfection isn’t the point – it’s making easy switches where we can! I decided to focus on high exposure items, i.e things we use everyday like cleaning products, candles and laundry. We now Thieves Cleaner to clean our entire home, we diffuse oils instead of lighting candles, and we use Thieves Laundry Soap instead of Tide (even the laundry soaps labeled “free and clear” have hidden chemicals). And did you know Mrs. Meyers is rated an 8 on Think Dirty? I thought that stuff was clean, but no, it uses a ton of synthetic fragrance.
Does Thieves Cleaner Really Work?
When your cleaning solution can be used to wash vegetables in your kitchen sink, it’s normal to wonder if it will do the same for dirt and grime around the house. Thieves is powerful and super concentrated. It’s a combo of essential oils (Clove, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Lemon, and Cinnamon) that works just as well, if not better, than bleach. It’s one bottle that you buy to create tons of your own sprays. Because it’s so concentrated, how much you dilute will depend on how you’re using it. You can also buy Thieves Dish Soap and Thieves Laundry Soap (which I also use daily). Oh, and it smells great!
Thieves has become such an easy part of our cleaning routine. I use it for everything!
These are the Thieves cleaning recipes I use most:
Thieves Produce Wash
Clean your sink and fill with water. Add 1 capful of Thieves Fruit and Veggie Soak. Place the fruit and/or veggies in the sink and let sit for 5-10 minutes. Pat dry with a dish cloth.
All-Purpose Cleaning Spray
This recipe is easily the most used in our home because it’s so versatile, and with kids and a baby, I have lots of messes to clean up! I use it on countertops, the kitchen table, stainless steel, cabinets, the outside of the microwave and oven, the refrigerator (inside on the shelves too), in our bathrooms, in our bedrooms, on toys….literally everything!
To make this all-purpose cleaner, you’ll mix 30 parts water to 1 part Thieves household cleaner. That equates to this much easier to read recipe:
- 2 cups of water
- 1 capful Thieves Household Cleaner
In a spray bottle, combine the water and concentrate and gently shake to combine. Spray on literally anything and wipe clean with a lint-free cloth or paper towel.
Thieves Laundry Hack
Pour 1/3 of your Thieves Laundry Detergent into a thirty-two ounce shampoo pump bottle
Add two caps of Thieves Household Cleaner
Add ten to twenty drops of Lemon Essential Oil
Fill to the top with distilled water
We use three to four pumps in each load depending on how much we are washing. I also add Molly’s Suds to extra stinky loads like Big B’s gym clothes, or when I want our white loads to be super bright!! 🍋 🧺
Thieves Scrub A Dub
I used to hoard soft scrub and clean everything from tubs, toilets to showers with bleach filled chemical bombs, I mean nothing else could actually kill germs like that right? WRONG! You can actually kill harmful germs and bacteria with plants 🌱 Isn’t that so much better?? It’s better for you lungs, your skin and the environment. Make this clean version of “soft scrub” with Thieves!
1 cup of baking soda
1/4-1/2 cup thieves cleaner
10 drops of lemon essential oil
Why Switch To Thieves Cleaner
Thieves Household cleaner is made from natural ingredients, and has a plant-based formula. You can naturally clean your home and feel good about it all. Who would have guessed that plants can work better than chemicals?! It’s better for you and also better for the environment.
It will give you a deep, effective clean without all the nasty toxins, dangerous chemicals and harmful fumes.
Safe for Kids
When you’ve got a very curious toddler who doesn’t like hearing no, it gives me such peace knowing I don’t worry about Owen getting in the cabinets under the sink. Since we switched to all non-toxic products I’m calmer when I suddenly realize it’s silent!
