PLAYING HOOKIE IS GOOD FOR YOUR SOUL

26 Oct 2017 Family, Kids

The word “hookie” means abandoning responsibility and calling out to everyone who is expecting you as part of your normal routine to just go have fun. We’ve instated a couple hookie days throughout the year in the Joy house, and they are my FAVORITE days. There is low expectation and just something about the spontaneous decision to tell everyone else, “today isn’t going to work out, but I’ll see you tomorrow!”, that leaves your soul filled with adventure and excitement. We did this yesterday and had such a fun day as a family.

We woke up in the morning and I scrambled to get things ready for a photoshoot that I had to get out of the way with the the kids, but we were done by 10 AM and ready to go. Brian took the kids out for bagels while I got us ready for our day. We packed a picnic lunch and went to Jones Family Farm which has a giant pumpkin patch and lots of fall activities for kids. The drive was SO pretty, the leaves are at peak around here and the colors are breathtaking. Since it was a Wednesday, we were some of the only people there and we got to enjoy everything with no one else around which was cool. We went on a hayride, picked out pumpkins, ran through a corn maze, took pictures, had a picnic lunch, it was all so fun and the kids had a blast! We spent a couple of hours there and headed home singing Mumford really loud and clapping in the car per usual. We lazied around the house for a couple hours and then headed out to dinner to great Mexican place, especially for kids because it’s loud, called Truck (in Bedford), and it was our best restaurant experience with them to date, we were both really impressed! We haven’t brought them out to dinner in a while, but said we would start to more now. They were both really well behaved, ate their dinners, and enjoyed mini-ice cream cones for dessert. Brian and I even got to enjoy a margarita!

We came home, put the kids to bed, watched a little TV and headed to bed ourselves, it was the perfect day.

I know this doesn’t sound like much, and you might be thinking, Cool Liz, you went to a pumpkin patch and out to dinner 👏🏻 but the spirit of the day was just F U N and I wanted to plant the seed in your head for your next “hookie day”. Life goes by really fast and these days make memories that will stay with you forever, and bottom line, sometimes you just need to tell everyone else to eff off and spend the day your way 😜

‘tis the summer of “no” for me, which may so ‘tis the summer of “no” for me, which may sound odd, but let me explain…

This is the summer of protecting my energy, keeping the good vibes close, and only saying yes to doing the things that truly bring us joy. I have found in the past that my patterns are typically to say yes to whatever may sound like a fun opportunity at the time, even if it’s months in advance. I’m sure you can guess what usually ends up happening, but when that day comes, I dread having made the plans! Most of the time, I would rather be home with my family, enjoying the beach, having quiet nights, etc… Now don’t get me wrong, I love a good time, but I have found the older I get, the simpler I like my life to be. I crave the freedom of not being on anyone else’s schedule, I don’t like being expected to be anywhere, I want my kids to just be free to play with their friends, and simply just enjoy the everyday moments.

My perfect summer looks like this… swimming in our pool, being at the beach with our friends and family, gardening, keeping up with my veggie garden, making yummy dinners, barbecuing, happy hour at the beach, taking walks, drinking coffee on the porch, reading books, watching movies as a family on the couch, playing tennis with my girlfriends … this is all heaven to me. We’re working pretty hard during the days with Marea, so when I’m not working, this is what I love to be doing.

How about you? Do you crave the simplicity? Or do you like having plans? Mix of both?
