Okay, shit’s getting real this year with the flu. So many people are down with it and I’m doing EVERYTHING in my power to keep us healthy and well, and our immune systems strong to avoid it this year.
So far, so good. Neither Brian nor Grace has missed any school this year, not even a runny nose so I like to think what we’re doing is helping some, but who knows, next week I could be coming on here from my bed with a full blown illness.
The main reason I use essential oils and Young Living in particular is because it gives me tools I can use at home to prevent illness and keep us well. I am RELIGIOUS about our routine and it’s like brushing teeth for the kids now, as well. I must admit it’s pretty empowering as a mother to have a stash of alternatives to use in addition to modern medicine (you know I am not one of those people who will tell you essential oils cure all). I love having so many oils to target different issues that come up, everything from ear infections, trouble settling down at night, stuffy noses, etc… Also, I’m not an expert who knows what to use for all this stuff but a great book that helps me is Gentle Babies. It’s basically a guide on how to use essential oils during pregnancy, and with infants and children. I HIGHLY recommend it if you’re thinking of getting started.
SO here’s how we use our oils.
Thieves (roll on) // Young Living sells pre-made rollers so that you don’t have to mess around with making one yourself. I order these just to have on hand and because I’m lazy. I roll this on their feet every.single.night, and in the morning behind their ears and down their necks a bit before school. I like to think it wards off germs.
Thieves Hand Purifier (comes in starter kit) // I send these to school with the kids in their lunch boxes. It’s 100% natural and essential oil based with no harsh chemicals for their hands, this is important to me especially because they are using their hands to eat! It also doesn’t dry out your hands so I love it!
Ningxia Red (samples come in starter kit) // This is an antioxidant powerhouse drink. It’s berry flavored and the kids love the taste. One serving is the equivalent to 59 heads of broccoli!
Thieves Essential Oil (comes in starter kit) // I diffuse this on the regular. In their bedrooms at night, I add 4 drops. I also diffuse it around the house when they come home from school, etc…
Frankincense (comes in starter kit) // I diffuse this in their bedrooms at night with the Thieves. Frankincense is known to calm anxieties and promote feelings of calm. Yes, please.
Peace + Calming (comes in starter kit) // Not sure if this benefits the kids more or me but it has the loveliest citrus scent and I use it in the diffuser a lot and roll it on the kids when they out of control. I am so big on the Thieves right now but when we’re not in major sickness prevention mode I love rolling this on their feet at night for peaceful sleep. It triggers them it’s time to rest.
MightyPro // Young Living’s kids probiotic. It comes in pixie-stick form which is a very easy “sell” to get them to take it. You can also add the powder to their drinks and smoothies. KidScents MightyPro features over 8 billion active, live cultures to support gastrointestinal and immune health = gut health in children, keeping kids up and active. Up to 80 percent of your immune system is housed in your gut, and supporting your gut directly correlates to supporting your immune system. KidScents MightyPro also includes prebiotics, which probiotics feed off of, making KidScents MightyPro an easy, 2-in-1 option.
Sleepyize // This one smells DREAMY and I alternate it in their diffusers at night. It’s formulated just for kids sleep and you can use it in their diffusers or pop a roller ball on top (the starter kit comes with two rollers) and roll it down their spines. It’s pre-diluted so you can use it directly on their skin.
Sniffease // Love this one!! If they have a runny nose we put this in their diffusers along with Thieves and also roll it on their chest at night. It helps them breathe and also smells so good!
Mary Ruth’s Elderberry // We added this to our routine a couple of weeks ago actually and the kids love it! It tastes great and elderberry is so good for immune support. Fun fact, I graduated college with Mary 🙂
Thieves cleaning products + laundry detergent // K, I believe in this one. Using clean stuff around your house lessens the toxic burden on your body and thus increases immune function. We don’t use anything but Thieves to clean all the things, toilet, counters, sinks, windows, all of it which really takes away a lot of the chemicals in the home. It comes in the form of a concentrate and it only takes one capful to make a 16 oz. spray bottle (comes to .80 per bottle! so very affordable!)
We also use the Thieves laundry detergent which is a biggie because you breathe in those fumes all day long when they sit on your clothes. Conventional detergents have lots of not so good ingredients that we don’t want our littles breathing in all day. Babyganics is rated an “F” with the EWG, can you believe it? Babyganics?!! Dreft is the same. UGH.
Epsom Salt Baths // We do these once per week and I’ll usually add a nice oil like Peace and Calming or Gentle Baby to it. All you need is 1/2 cup of Epsom Salts, and 2 tablespoons of baking soda (To help promote elimination of toxins and clean unfiltered water). If your child weighs 60 pounds or more, use 1 cup.
Fill the bathtub half way with warm water. Place the salts and baking soda, and essential oils and stir with your hand to dissolve. Take a bath for at least 15-20 minutes. The body will extract the toxins first, and then start to absorb the minerals. Magnesium also promotes sleep so your kids will ready for bed soon after 🙂
Owl Diffuser // This is definitely not a requirement but YL sells these cute owl diffusers we put in the kids rooms. They are touch activated, play white noise and you can set different colors that they like to pick out.
So, healthy eating, staying out of places you know sickness is rampant like indoor play gyms and such, healthy sleep, and all of the above is what we’re doing!
